I wish I had spent more time with him. Life circumstances didn’t really allow it, but now that I’m in my current role as a head coach, I wish I had been around him more.

Coach Bill Miller was my coaching mentor, example, and hero. So many lessons. So many things that still resonate and apply. But not enough. Now that he’s gone, I feel like I need his wisdom more than ever. I soaked up what I could when I was around him, but there are many times when I need to call him. I need him to show me the way.

I wish I had one more time to sit in his office and hear him talk about players and coaching.

Matthew 5:2 — “…after he sat down, his disciples came to him. He opened his mouth and began to teach them…”

They were about to hear from the greatest teacher the world has ever known. So they sat at his feet and soaked it up. The Sermon on the Mount would prepare them for life in the Kingdom of God. Soon, they would discover that his time on earth was limited and so was their in-person time with him.

One day, we will either be prepared or not. Prepared for what? For whatever it is. If we sit at the Master’s feet as his disciples, he will prepare us through his Word and Spirit for whatever he will lead us through in life.

One day, we will either be grateful for the time spent with him or regret the time not spent.

Today prepares for one day. Sit at his feet, spend time in his word, give everything to him in prayer. Be his disciple today so that we are prepared for one day.

Lord Jesus, I’m here to be your disciple. Teach me, lead me, show me. Amen.
