Baseball is simple, really. The point of offense is to avoid making outs. The point of defense is to get outs. If a team is proficient at both of those will make winning a difficult endeavor for its opponents. A team that understands those simple concepts finds itself on solid footing.

Proverbs 22:19 says this about Biblical teaching–“So that your trust may be in the Lord, I have taught you today, even you.”

There is but one point to offense: avoid outs. There is but one point to defense: get outs. And there is but one point to biblical teaching; trust God.

If we are to be successful on the field, we must make it simple.

If we are to read the Bible well, we must do the same.

As you and I read the Scripture, let’s never forget that the point of learning it is not that we would become scholars or simply fill our heads with knowledge, but that we would make it simple: trust God.

We can learn all there is to know about the mechanics of the swing, fielding, pitching, and all the rest, but if we do not understand the simple truth of offense and defense, we have missed the point of the game.

Likewise, we can learn all there is to know about the stories, characters, and original languages of the Bible, but we do not trust God, we have missed the point of the Bible.

Today, let’s not miss the point, on or off the field.

Lord Jesus, through your word, teach me to trust you. Amen.
